Hippo Roller Re-Design Water Transportation Device
After what started as a fundraising initiative by Project H Design to donate and distribute 75 Hippo Rollers to communities in South Africa, we were asked to assist in redesigning the wildly successful water transportation device to assist the Hippo Roller Organization to meet the increasing demand for Hippo Rollers in other parts of Africa and the world. Being cost-prohibitive to ship, increased efficiency in this realm was essential.
Through a collaborative process – an asymmetrical, two part capsule design was generated. The cap removes during shipping, stacks onto the opposite end of the barrel, while allowing the next barrel to nest inside of the container. The design provides several benefits. First, about three new Hippo Rollers can ship in space of one previous design. Second, the asymmetrical design keeps the seam away from direct impact and the brunt of the force, which helps maintain the rugged durability of the original. Third, the iconic form was seamlessly integrated into the new design.
